Jason Voorhees: Friday the 13th.

Our next character to focus on is one that has more than earned his right to be in the halls of horror. Jason Voorhees is a fictional character. His first movie was released in 1980 and from then became part of a series of horror movies ending in the year 2001. Jason’s story is based on the true crime story of three teenagers who were murdered in Finland.

Jason Voorhees’ first appearance in the 1980 movie was as the young son of a camp-cook-turned-killer, Mrs. Pamela Voorhees. Poor kid didn’t stand a chance; he was bullied for being considered “stupid” as he spent most of his time with his mother instead of interacting with the other children. He was thrown into the lake by his persecutors and, as a poor swimmer, drowned. Poor Jason drowned while the camp leaders were busy with something else instead of watching him. His mother was so filled with hate for what had happened to her little boy that she sought revenge for the death of her son. Jason, however, survived and returned to become the serial killer who haunts Camp Crystal Lake. An undead, almost completely silent, unstoppable killing machine, Jason has killed almost 200 people. Jason kills with his many abilities from immortality to superhuman accuracy. In the movie Jason X we see how he got some of these abilities such as the nanites that grant him regenerative abilities.

After the events of Jason’s death, the owners of the camp–a Mr. & Mrs. Christy–ordered the camp shutdown. After the death of Jason was ruled an accident, the Christy’s re-opened the summer camp in the summer of 1962. After the discovery of arsenic in the lake, the camp was once again forced to shut down. Between the years of 1960 and 1970, mysterious fires would randomly breakout and this caused them to nickname it ‘Camp Blood’. When Steven Christy announced his intention to re-open the camp after the death of his mother and father, it caused Pamela Voorhees to go on a killing spree. The only survivor of her spree was a young woman, Alice Hardy. She managed to kill Pamela Voorhees. She was so weak after the events of the night, that she passed out in a canoe. It was at this point that a prepubescent Jason pulled her into the lake and she almost drowned.

To this day people are still making reference to Jason. Jason has been played by multiple actors including Derek Mears, Ken Kerzinger and many others as well as the original Jason Voorhees, Ari Lehman. Jason Voorhees\’ mask has become a major pop culture icon. Interestingly enough, the hockey goalie mask that Jason wears appeared for the very first time in Friday the 13th Part III and actually replaced a burlap sack worn in the original 1980 movie. Jason has been in various humor magazines, referenced in various films, spoofed in movies and he\’s even inspired a horror-punk band. Jason is one of three fictional characters to win a MTV Lifetime Award (1992). He shared this honour with Godzilla and Chewbacca.

Jason Voorhees is a very famous horror star and has had many different actors playing his part. He has even shared a movie with iconic Freddy Kruger (A Nightmare on Elm Street) and DC has even made a comic book miniseries based on him. He truly deserves his place in the horror movie halls of fame.

God bless all of you, my darling avidReaders.
